Arizona license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up Arizona drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Single plate state

Arizona is a single-plate state. A.R.S. § 28-2354 requires every registered passenger vehicle to display only one license plate, on the rear of the vehicle. Decorative front plates are permitted.

Front plate rule

No front plate is required or issued for passenger vehicles in Arizona. Drivers may legally display decorative front plates as long as they do not obstruct visibility or imitate official plates.

Registration stickers & display

Arizona issues a single registration tab affixed to the upper-right corner of the rear plate showing the month and year of expiration. Registration is verified electronically — no separate sticker for inspection.

Inspection / smog check

Arizona requires biennial emissions testing for vehicles registered in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas (Maricopa and Pima counties). Vehicles 5 model years old or newer are exempt. There is no statewide safety inspection requirement.

Types of Arizona license plates

Arizona issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Standard Arizona

Default rear-only plate with the 'Arizona' Saguaro design issued in the ABC1234 format.

Personalized / Vanity

Up to 7 characters on the standard or specialty backgrounds for $25/year through ServiceArizona.

Disabled Person / Disabled Veteran

ISA wheelchair symbol; qualifies for accessible parking statewide. DV plates carry reduced fees.

Military specialty

Purple Heart, Pearl Harbor Survivor, POW/MIA, Gold Star Family, and branch-specific designs (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard).

Special interest

Arizona Highways, Grand Canyon, Wildlife Conservation, ASU Sun Devils, U of A Wildcats, NAU Lumberjacks, and dozens of cause plates.

Historic Vehicle

For vehicles 25+ years old used primarily for exhibitions, parades, and club events.
